Cricket World Cup 2011

24 February 2011
7th match, Group B

South Africa v West Indies
South Africa won by 7 wickets (with 43 balls remaining)

Indeed a crunch encounter for one of the favorites for the World Cup 2011 - South Africa, and they did well right from the word go by eliminating the thundering Chris Gayle in the very first over. It was the third ball of the experimental first over of spin by the South African T20 captain Johan Botha which saw the back of Gayle with 1 run on the board. Then, Devon Smith and younger of the Bravo brothers, Darren Bravo did well before the Windies' collapsed to 4/120. Another brief middle order partnership involving the other Bravo, Dwayne this time and Shivnarine Chanderpaul took the West Indies to a below par score of 222 with the big guns Kieron Pollard and captain Darren Sammy getting out without troubling the scorers. interestingly, the Pakistan born debutant leg spinner Imran Tahir - South Africa's trump card for the World Cup bowled exceedingly well to take 4 wicket while their premiere fast bowler Dale Steyn went about his business taking 3.

It was always going to be an easy task for South Africa to hunt down the meager target of 223 but cricket is full of surprises. West Indies tried to run cat among the pigeons by removing two South African run machines; Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis before another mister consistent - AB de Villiers took control of the innings and scored a century full of neat, elegant and powerful stroke play. He was well supported first by his captain Graeme Smith and then by JP Duminy with both scoring 45 and 42 respectively. Obviously enough there was nothing to write home about the Caribbean side's bowling performance as the match concluded in the 43rd over despite a brief divine interruption by rain. Additionally, injury to the ace West Indian all rounder Dwayne Bravo during his 3rd over has severely dented his teams chances in the tournament.

AB de Villiers took the MoM award for his super cool 107 in 105 balls.
